Oh my little donkey,
Lost there upon a sign
In a bustling city high street
In 1979.
Distracted by the instruments
The music and the joy
I only meant to set you down
My first abandoned toy.
My poor little donkey
You image etched within my mind
The lost soul of a childhood
Forgotten on a sign.
Were you found and rescued
By a loving child
Or did the elements carry you
Away into the wild?
The first loss and the hardest
Your shadow cast a net
Around the toys I tightly held
With the memory of regret.
I hope you know you’re treasured
And you defined a part of me
for I make sure I hold the ones I love
as close as they can be.
