Blackberry and Apple

I have a very unusual tree growing in my garden. It is the Rubus & Malus Domestica. It’s rather special and provides a wonderful bounty in time for the pie and crumble season in late August. Delicious!

Ok. I don’t have a blackberry and apple tree growing in my garden. I have an apple tree and I have a bramble problem. Patches of brambles have rooted themselves throughout my garden, with one huge patch under the apple tree. So later in the year it may well look like a blackberry and apple tree. I now picture a tree filled with pies! Excuse the drawing!

But these brambles are my garden nemesis. I cut them back, they grow; they re-root themselves and return each year bigger and better than the year before. A big “up yours” to my efforts at clearing.

My method admittedly isn’t the fastest. I use secateurs to work my way through the muddle of new growths until I get to the mothership of roots! And in doing it this way I have developed a huge respect for these tenacious plants. They’re probably laughing at me as they watch my pointless attempt at holding off their garden take over.

I do feel a little sad at clearing away what is set to be quite the blackberry harvest but the tangle of branches with their spikey thorns make parts of the garden inaccessible.

So the big cut back has begun and you can follow more garden stories on my Instagram page. And for pro gardening tips and ideas I suggest you try a different website…
