Overwhelm

The last time I logged into my website was about 3 weeks ago when I wrote Daily Discoveries – where I’d made a sort of promise to myself to discover something new and to see the wonder in the everyday. But then overwhelm hit and the everyday became an overstimulated pile of brain muddle mixed with panic and anxiety.

Arg!

I’ve struggled to read my book, listen to podcasts or even watch an episode of anything on Netflix. Instead, I’ve been dopamine doom scrolling on social media where I’ve numbed myself with silly skits and cat videos.

I have still managed to discover new things – how to do nail art badly, I learnt that there are about 2188 years between the death of Aristotle and the death of Marie Curie – which put a lot into perspective (don’t ask. A blog for another day). I have had to research the environmental impact of cloud computing as well as the upcoming regulation of AI (again, don’t ask).

But with the last few days of term, school events, full-time work, poorly cat needing veterinary treatment and other commitments I found myself at full mental capacity.

Even a hygienist appointment nearly tipped me over the edge.

So, I’m taking the pressure off myself. I’m still pursuing my daily discoveries – tomorrow is new music Friday on Apple Music which is always something I look forward to. I’ve started a new audiobook called Shining Girls by Lauren Beukes which I am listening to at bedtime, and I’m off to an Ibiza Symphony evening at the Cheltenham Racecourse at the weekend. There is lots to look forward to and discover, I’m just not writing or posting about it every day.

Does anyone else struggle with overwhelm? Is it a midlife thing or just a life thing? I’d love to know – post a comment!
